Introduction

The power of art to improve the physical, mental and emotional well-being of young patients in the pediatric intensive care unit of the HUG.

The association À côté de toi and the the ART-THERAPIE Foundation are collaborating to set up and finance an ambitious art and music therapy project in the pediatric intensive care unit of the HUG.

After seeing a brief overview of the effect of art therapy on our daughter, we were convinced of the importance of an art and music therapy program in the pediatric intensive care unit. Our desire through this project is to also allow a regular follow-up of the little patients throughout their hospitalization at the HUG in order to indirectly take care of the parents and also the siblings. We know from experience that parents can feel overwhelmed by the situation and experience great emotional and physical fatigue.

Details of the project

Pediatric intensive care units care for a wide range of critically ill children whose vital, respiratory or cardiac functions are impaired and who need to be monitored closely. In this challenging situation, creative therapies, such as art therapy, can have a beneficial effect on the health of young patients and their families, promoting and accelerating the healing process in a gentle and non-invasive way.

The WHO recognizes the importance of implementing art interventions and collaborations between the cultural, social welfare and health sectors. Hospitals must seek support to fund creative therapy programs, such as art therapy, as they cannot fund them entirely on their own. Non-profit organizations, such as the association À côté de toi or the Fondation ART-THERAPIE, are often needed to implement these programs in many hospitals.

The main objective is to ensure the implementation of an art and music therapy program in the pediatric intensive care unit of the HUG with the presence of a music therapist and an art therapist.

  • 3-year project,

  • a music therapist at 20%,

  • an art therapist at 30%,

  • budget: 195'000 CHF, or 65'000 CHF per year.

The art therapists will have a work contract with the HUG.

Temporal objective

This program will start in spring 2023.
